The first time I visited Gettysburg as a young adult I surprised to see the statue of Major Gen. John Reynolds on the north side of Chambersburg Road. Students of the battle of Gettysburg know that Reynolds was killed south of the road near Herbst Woods (today, called Reynolds Woods).

This is wrong, I thought. They put the statue in the wrong place. A couple of years later, I discovered the folks who erected the statue deliberately put it in the wrong place. They wanted it by the road where more people would see it. Anyone interested in the Gettysburg battlefield is familiar with the McPherson farm. The barn is one of the first things on the battlefield a visitor encounters coming into town via U.S. 30. The barn has been photographed numerous times, first by Matthew Brady’s photographers a couple of days after the battle.

The barn is an iconic image that presents an interesting challenge as a photographer to create something different.

This shot from the opposite side of what’s normal. If you don’t know it’s McPherson’s Barn, the image still works as a nice barn photograph. If you do, the statue off to the side and the recognition of the location tells a story.

Prints 11x14 and larger may be drop-shipped directly from FinerWorks, a company specializing in fine art and high quality photographic printing.

Prints typically have a 1-inch additional white border around the image to allow for a better fit in pre-cut mats. If you do not want a border, please specify in the buyer's comments and the image will be printed borderless.

The watermark and frame do not appear in the final print.
